What an Interlocking Driveway Costs in the GTA (2026 Prices)

Premium interlocking driveway and stone courtyard installed by a luxury landscape contractor in Etobicoke

For 2026, installed interlocking driveway pricing across the GTA runs from roughly $18 per square foot for standard concrete pavers on a properly built base to $60 and beyond for granite setts over a heated slab. A typical double driveway of 600 to 900 square feet therefore lands between $14,000 and $45,000 — a range wide enough that the specification, not the stone, deserves your attention first.

Driveways are also where the GTA’s widest quality spread hides. The same pallet of pavers can sit on eight inches of hastily compacted fill or on fourteen inches of engineered granular — identical on day one, unrecognizable after the third winter. This guide breaks down honest 2026 pricing by system, what a correct base contains, the municipal rules that catch homeowners off guard, and how to compare quotes that refuse to be compared.

Installed Prices by System, 2026

Standard duty: quality concrete pavers from the major Ontario manufacturers in conventional formats run $18 to $26 per square foot installed with soldier-course borders. Premium: large-format slabs and plank formats run $26 to $38 — note that vehicular areas need appropriate thickness, typically 70 to 80 millimetres, which is one reason driveway slabs cost more than the patio versions of the same product line.

Porcelain pavers on a vehicular build-up run $35 to $48 installed and reward the spend with colourfast, sealed-for-life surfaces. Natural stone — granite setts, flamed granite planks — runs $45 to $65 and suits estate frontages where the driveway is architecture. Every system shares one truth: material is typically only 30 to 40 per cent of the installed price. The rest is excavation, base, labour and edge engineering — which is why a cheap quote almost never means cheaper stone.

Add-ons price separately: permeable paver systems add $3 to $6 per square foot for their deeper open-graded base; snow-melt — hydronic or electric — adds $25 to $40 per square foot in the heated zones plus boiler or panel capacity indoors; aprons, banding and inlays price by linear complexity. Lighting — recessed markers, step washes — typically adds $2,000 to $8,000 to a front-yard project.

A note on comparisons you will inevitably make: the same pavers quoted for a rear patio run $4 to $8 per square foot less than the driveway version, because pedestrian build-ups are shallower and thinner stone qualifies. And asphalt at $6 to $10 per square foot remains the budget benchmark — but with a 12-to-18-year life against interlocking’s 25 to 30, and no repair story beyond patching, the lifetime cost gap is far narrower than the invoice suggests.

The Base Is the Product

A driveway is a civil-engineering assembly wearing decorative stone. The correct build: excavate 10 to 14 inches; separate subgrade from base with woven geotextile; place Granular B and Granular A in lifts, compacting each to specified density; screed a consistent bedding course; lay, cut and edge-restrain the pavers with concrete or spiked aluminum; sweep and vibrate polymeric sand into the joints. Skip or thin any layer and the surface will report it in rutting and heave within two winters.

When you compare quotes, roughly 80 per cent of the price difference lives underground. Insist that excavation depth, granular type and thickness, geotextile, compaction method and edge restraint appear in writing. A contractor who specifies twelve compacted inches of granular over geotextile is not more expensive than one who writes nothing — they are quoting a different, longer-lived product that happens to share a colour.

Municipal Rules That Catch Homeowners

Widening the driveway or the curb cut is a permit matter, not a design choice. The City of Toronto regulates front-yard paving firmly: zoning caps how much of a front yard may be paved versus soft-landscaped, curb-cut widening requires a separate right-of-way application with its own fees, and permeable paving sometimes earns relief that impermeable surfaces do not. Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill each cap driveway width relative to lot frontage as well.

None of this is onerous when handled early — it is a two-to-six-week paperwork lane that runs while materials are on order. It becomes expensive only in reverse: a widened driveway installed without approval can trigger an order to restore, which means demolishing new work. Ask your contractor who is responsible for municipal approvals in the contract; the correct answer is them.

Heated Driveways, Drainage and the Water Question

Snow-melt systems have moved from novelty to standard on luxury frontages: hydronic loops fed by a dedicated boiler for large areas, electric cable for walkways and steps. Beyond the $25-to-$40-per-square-foot premium, plan for the mechanical space and the gas or panel capacity, and zone the system — heating 1,200 square feet of driveway on a moisture sensor beats heating it on a switch. Operating cost for a typical zoned hydronic system runs a few hundred dollars per winter, not thousands.

Drainage is the quieter engineering. Surface water must move away from the foundation and, in most municipalities, must not discharge onto a neighbour’s lot; that means graded falls, channel drains at garage thresholds tied to storm or dry wells, and — increasingly — permeable systems that let the driveway absorb its own runoff. If your existing driveway ponds or your garage slab takes water each March, the interlocking project is the moment to fix the cause, not just the surface.

Repair, Relay or Replace?

Interlocking’s quiet advantage is repairability. A driveway that has settled at the apron or heaved along an edge can often be lifted, re-graded and relaid on a corrected base for $8 to $14 per square foot in the affected zone — reusing the original pavers and matching the rest of the surface invisibly. That is only true, however, when the original installation used sound pavers on a salvageable base; stone laid over topsoil is a replacement, not a repair.

The diagnostic is simple: isolated settlement near downspouts, the apron or a trench line suggests local base failure — repairable; broad waviness across the field suggests systemic base failure — replace; spalled, flaking pavers after years of salt suggest material end-of-life — replace and upgrade the specification. An honest exterior contractor will tell you which case you have and price both paths; be wary of anyone whose answer to every driveway is demolition.

How to Compare Quotes

Reduce every bid to the same question set: excavation depth and disposal included? Granular specification and compacted thickness? Geotextile? Paver line, format and thickness in millimetres? Edge restraint type? Polymeric sand brand? Municipal approvals handled by whom? And warranty — in writing, covering settlement, not just materials. Two years on workmanship is common; strong exterior contractors stand behind base settlement for five.

Finally, timing: exterior season in the GTA runs April to November, and the best crews book out by late winter. Signing in January or February typically earns better scheduling — and occasionally better pricing — than calling in May, and it gives the municipal paperwork lane time to clear before the excavator arrives. A driveway built once, correctly, is a 25-to-30-year asset; built twice, it is the most expensive cheap thing you ever bought.

If the driveway is part of a larger frontage plan — walkways, retaining, planting, lighting — sequence it inside that master plan rather than as an island. Conduit for future lighting, irrigation sleeves and drainage mains cost almost nothing to place during excavation and small fortunes after. We design frontages as one composition for exactly that reason: driveway, walks and garden running on a single drainage and lighting spine.
