What We Do

Exterior stonework fails from the bottom, never the top. A heaved driveway or a sunken patio is a base problem — too little granular, too little compaction, no geotextile — installed by crews who priced by the square foot and left. Our interlocking work in Toronto is built like the structures we put up: excavation to engineered depth, compacted granular lifts, precise screeding, and only then the surface you actually see.

Design comes before excavation. We plan driveways, walkways, patios, and retaining walls as one composition with the architecture of the house — sight lines from the front door, the geometry of the auto court, how water moves across every finished plane. The result reads less like landscaping in the GTA and more like the house extending its order into the lot.

The surface is the last fifty millimetres — everything below it is why our work stays flat.

The base specification is the product. For driveway interlocking we excavate 250 to 300 millimetres, lay woven geotextile to separate subsoil from structure, and compact Granular A in 100-millimetre lifts to 98 percent density before a 25-millimetre bedding course is screeded flat. Pavers are rated 8,000 PSI and freeze-thaw tested — nearly triple the strength of poured concrete — with polymeric sand locking the joints. This is why our driveways stay planar while others ripple by their third February.

Water is designed, not hoped for. Every surface is graded a minimum of two percent away from the foundation; catch basins and drainage channels carry runoff to grade or storm connections; permeable paver systems answer the City of Toronto’s downspout-disconnection logic by letting the lot absorb its own rainfall. On sloped properties we integrate weeping tile behind every retaining wall, because a wall that holds soil but traps water is a wall on a schedule to fail.

Structural landscape elements are engineered, and the paperwork is ours to manage. Retaining walls exceeding one metre require engineered drawings and municipal review in most GTA jurisdictions; driveway widenings and new curb cuts in Toronto go through Transportation Services approval; pool surrounds must meet enclosure bylaws before a single coping stone is set. We produce the drawings, submit the applications, and schedule the inspections — the same permit discipline we bring to a custom home, applied to patio design in Toronto and beyond.

The soft program is chosen for a four-season city: layered evergreen structure so the composition holds in January, ornamental grasses and serviceberry for privacy without shade, irrigation zoned to planting type, and low-voltage lighting that grazes stone rather than flooding it. Snow-melt loops beneath principal walks and steps — laid in the bedding course during construction — remove the last argument against natural stone in a Toronto winter.

Quality driveway interlocking runs $18–$35 per square foot installed, depending on paver line and base depth; natural stone runs $35–$60. A typical double driveway lands between $15,000 and $35,000. Our price always includes full-depth excavation and a compacted Granular A base — the part that determines whether it lasts.

A driveway alone takes one to two weeks. A complete rebuild — driveway, walkways, patio, retaining walls, lighting, and planting — typically runs six to ten weeks depending on scope and weather. We sequence hardscape first, then irrigation and lighting rough-ins, then softscape, so the site is disturbed once.

For Ontario winters, yes. Concrete pavers are rated around 8,000 PSI — nearly triple poured concrete — and the jointed system flexes with frost instead of cracking. Individual pavers can be lifted and relaid after utility work, and permeable formats manage stormwater on site. Asphalt is cheaper on day one and only day one.

Poor drainage is the root of most foundation and hardscape failures we are hired to correct.
