Toronto rules for driveways, trees and ravine lots
Most interlocking and softscape work in Toronto needs no building permit, but the exceptions matter: retaining walls over one metre, new or widened curb cuts, and any front-yard parking pad all require City approval, with right-of-way permits taking several weeks. The City of Toronto Building Division and Transportation Services both touch driveway files — we file with each.
Tree protection is the sleeper issue. Removing or injuring a private tree of 30 cm diameter or greater requires an Urban Forestry permit with a replanting plan, and work near a City street tree triggers hoarding requirements. On ravine lots, grading and planting changes need Ravine bylaw sign-off, which can add four to eight weeks. We build these timelines into the proposal, not into your patio season.
